The Bryn Mawr Club ofSouthern California
Newsletter - Fall 2001
Letter from the Presidents
Margaret Tatar '80 and Saskia Subramanian '88, your new co-presidents, send greetings and warm wishes to the Bryn Mawr College Community in Southern California. We would like to extend our thanks to Kristine MacRae, our out-going club president. She provided exceptional leadership to the Club at a critical time, and we all owe a great debt of gratitude for her hard work, tenacity, and determination in reorganizing and building the club. She will be a tough act to follow!

Our goal in the coming year is to continue to develop the club and to encourage participation in club events. We face some difficulty in serving such a widespread population; unlike other cities that have alumnae living in closer proximity to each other, our members are far-flung, and we realize that attending events can be difficult due to simple geography. Certainly, we are making every effort to offer activities in a variety of locations in Southern California, but even if events are far from home, please contact us if you would like to attend-often carpools can be arranged. Also, if you would like to host an event or start an activity, PLEASE feel free to contact us about doing so. We have already had a club member offer to organize a book club in the Orange County area; certainly more such activities would be very welcome as would informal wine tastings, supper clubs, music events, etc. As Bryn Mawr alumnae, we are part of a very special community based upon a unique and rich intellectual tradition. Help us to keep it flourishing in Southern California.

Our best to all of you; we look forward to seeing you in the coming year!

Create An Event
If the offerings of the Club don't seem to spark your interest of late, we invite you to jump in with ideas of your own. Any and all suggestions are welcome, including those that cater to special interest groups (e.g. Alumnae with kids, something with S.O.s, certain age groups only, geographically desireables...)

These events needs not be complicated or expensive-just an opportunity for friendships old and new. A few suggestions: Wine or beer tasting in your living room (I did this in my apartment as a "recent grads" event many years ago and we had a blast), an afternoon in the park (no effort other than to show up early to reserve some space), group outing to Dodger stadium or another sports event (LA Sparks?), a night at the Hollywood Bowl (advance planning for 2002), any activity starring or featuring one of us.

We want the Club activities to reflect the interests of our membership-so let us know what sounds interesting. How far are you willing to travel? Which recent events have been great and which were a snore? While we understand that costs can be prohibitive, we'd like to collect a few extra dollars periodically to be able to donate to our scholarship funds.

If you've lost your imagination temporarily and can't come up with ideas yourself, how about hosting a club organized event? We do appreciate members who open their homes for either visiting professor events or recruitment teas/parties. The local club board or the college does most of the work for these. It's quite helpful to be able to call on members who live throughout the Southland so that we don't end up with the same long drives. (San Diego, Santa Barbara and Bakersfield-we know you're out there). Please contact me, Eve Guth, with your wonderful ideas or to volunteer some space.

Buy Greeting Cards, Help the College
Please help us support Financial Aid at the College by ordering your greeting cards from Bryn Mawr College Library Publications! Library staff and archivists have discovered many beautiful new images in the College collections to add to our already extensive selection of cards. You may order through the print catalog or on-line (if you have not received a catalog, please request one from Maria Rudolph, Library Publications Coordinator). If you have already visited our website, check back periodically, as we will be offering sales and promotions throughout the year, available only through the Internet. Library Publications is an all-volunteer effort staffed by members of the Club with support from the College. All proceeds benefit Financial Aid and the BMC libraries.
Introduction to the Career Network
The BMC Career Network is entering its 12th year and our goal continues to be to create a program which serves the needs of BMC alumnae in all stages of their careers. Career services are available to all graduates of Bryn Mawr including alumnae/i of the graduate school and the School of Social Work.

Alumnae can take advantage of the following services:

The Alumnae Career Counselor
Debbie Becker is a professional career counselor who specializes in helping alumnae with all aspects of their job search. She is available by telephone or in person to review your resume and provide other career advice. There is no charge for her services. Debbie may be reached at the CDO office (610) 526-5174 or dbecker@brynmawr.edu.
Local Career Development Reps
Seven cities across the county currently have CDRs. The CDRs plan local programs and serve as a link to local career resources.
Alumnae Networking
Any alumna interested in learning about a particular field, industry or career may contact Megan Grant in the Alumnae Association office for a list of alumnae who have offered to give informational interviews. Megan can be reached at mgrant@brynmawr.edu.
Career Website
Visit our website for a page devoted to careers. Currently you can find information about upcoming events, links to career services websites, and links to the local CDRs. You can also link to the CDO website which provides access to many online career resources.
Network News
A bi-weekly online newsletter of job listings for alumnae currently available on-line. For access to this document, or to list a position, call the CDO at (610) 526-5174.
There are many ways to get involved in the career network. You can joint your local career committee by contacting your CDR or club president, you can attend events, sponsor an extern, give informational interviews, and list jobs in Network News. Most importantly, keep the Alumnae Association up to date with your job title and company for our networking lists. You can easily update your information at the Alumnae Association website or by leaving a message at 1-800-BMC-ALUM.

If you have any thoughts or ideas, let us know by contacting Margaret Hoag, Executive Board Member for the Career Network at (978) 369-5970 or margaret.hoag@alumnae.brynmawr.edu.

Annual Report
We have had an extremely exciting year! Our Library Publications catalog has proved immensely popular and has provided the Southern California Club with a new source of income. Card sales have enabled us to give $2,000 to the Alumnae Regional Scholarship Fund and $2,000 to the Hope Wearn Troxell Fund. This is quadruple the amount our Club was able to give to these scholarship funds last year! We are hoping that this is the sign of things to come. Please continue to support our Club by buying cards from the new catalog, by attending the events we sponsor, and by making donations. In doing so, you help Bryn Mawr undergraduates from this area with tuition expenses.

Remember, like the College, our Fiscal Year ends in June. Now is the time to send your new donation. All donations over $20 will receive the new 2001-2002 Club Directory, including indices by city of residence and year of graduation. Thank you so much for your support. We look forward to seeing you at future events.

Sincerely, Susan Wood '94, Outgoing Treasurer

Alumnae attended from classes spanning the fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties, and even the class of 2000. This Spring, we hope to host May Day gatherings in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara Counties also. Stay tuned for details.
