CONTINUING EDUCATION TEA EXAMINES IRAQ
Professor James Martin to discuss his views of the Iraq War II
Bryn Mawr Professor James Martin teaches clinical practice, human behavior and issues of cultural diversity in the School of Social Work. A retired Army Colonel, Martin had a long military career that included a variety of clinical, research, management and executive-level policy assignments. He was the senior military social work officer in the Persian Gulf during the Gulf War and is the senior editor of The Gulf War and Mental Health: A Comprehensive Guide. He recently edited The Military Family: A Practice Guide for Human Service Providers. He is a consultant to the Department of the Army and to the Veterans Administration and is a member of numerous national organizations concerned with human services research and military family life issues.
His talk will focus on some of the duty & career challenges currently facing members of the Armed Forces (and their families) and some of the ways that the Department of Defense is responding to these concerns, through his lens as an Army Social Work Officer and now as an academic interested in this special population of men & women serving our nation. Please join us for this timely event!
This event will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the home of Ellie Herman (140 N. McCadden Place, Hancock Park). Please RSVP to Saskia.***

LIBRARY PUBLICATIONS
Through Library Publications, the Bryn Mawr Club of Southern California provides a steady source of income for our Club, much as the Owl Bookstores do for many other clubs. The income helps cover our operating expenses; but more importantly it allows us to contribute to the Hope Wearn Troxell Fund and to the Alumnae Regional Scholarship Fund.
Just in time for the holidays, you can order custom printed or personalized cards. Each card costs $2.00, which includes both the card and the imprinting. A minimum order of 50 cards is required, for a minimum charge of $100.00. If you desire a personal touch on your cards, you may send us a handwritten message, signature, or both, which can be scanned in and imprinted on the card of your choice, at the same price of $2.00 per card. Custom printing orders can be filled within a week. Please contact Maria for a finished sample. Imprinted cards are a great way for businesses to thank clients and customers or wish them "happy holidays".

ANNUAL REPORT
The 2002-2003 fiscal year for the Club was a successful one. We received donations of $1,365 from Club members and others, we held a successful book sale in the fall which brought in more than $500, and our work with Library Publications on the catalog brought in $3,000 (received after the close of the fiscal year, so that it does not appear on the annual report). This enabled us to donate a total of $3,000 in the current fiscal year to the two scholarship funds the Club supports, the Hope Wearn Troxell Fund which provides support to a student from Southern California, and the Alumnae Regional Scholarship Fund. It also paid for the costs of printing and mailing the newsletter, and maintaining the Club’s website and post office box.
In addition to the cash donations that the Club receives, we rely on our members, particularly our board members, to provide food and drink at the various events that we hold during the year and to pay other costs incurred by the Club, which allows us to make larger donations to the two scholarship funds.
As you can see from last year’s annual report, donations are an important source of funds for the Club. The continuing effect of the economic downturn on the College’s finances means that in coming years we may not receive as much as the $3,000 we received this year from Library Publications. Your donations will help us continue to provide scholarship funds to current students, plan activities that bring us together here in Southern California, and stay in contact through the newsletter and publication of the Club directory.
NEW CLUB DIRECTORY
We are putting together a new version of our Club directory, available to any member who donates $20 or more to the Club. If you would like to have your business card, or a half or full page announcement regarding your business, appear in the directory, please let me know. The cost for including a copy of your business card will be $10. A half page announcement will be $25 and a full-page announcement will be $50.
Sincerely,
Janet Hoffman ’77, Treasurer
