| "Bringing Visual Culture to Late Antiquity" The Club is pleased to announce the latest installment of our favorite event. Please join us in welcoming Dale Kinney, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Professor of History of Art on Sunday, April 14, 2:00 p.m. at the home of Eve Guth in Encino. Our special guests at this event will be future members of the Class of 2006. Professor Kinney is a specialist in medieval art and architecture, especially the art of medieval Italy and specifically the city of Rome. Her research has been supported by fellowships from the Institute for Advanced Study (1982), the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (1989), and the National Endowment for the Humanities (1996). Her work has been published in American and European journals (Art Bulletin, 1986; Jahrbuch fur Antike und Christentum, 1994; American Journal of Archaeology, 1994), in collective volumes including "The Art of Interpreting" (1995), and in reference works including the Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium (1991). Kinney is editor of the journal Gesta , which publishes international scholarship on all aspects of medieval art. She teaches an undergraduate seminar, "Icons and Idols," and undergraduate surveys of medieval art and medieval architecture. Topics of recent graduate seminars include "Spolia" and "Problems in Fourth-Century Art". Since coming to Bryn Mawr in 1972, she has supervised 14 M.A. theses and 14 dissertations, including four currently in progress. If you would like to join us, please contact Saskia Subramanian. Guests are welcome. Presentation Abstract | |||
| Admissions Update | |||
| You may not be aware that California sends the 3rd largest pool of students to Bryn Mawr! This year, we are delighted to have 3 early decision acceptances and as of December 17, more students had applied for regular admission and an additional 30 had expressed interest. A welcome party is planned for April 14th at the home of Eve Guth; all local alums are invited to come and meet the new Mawrtyrs. Please see the front cover for more details. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many wonderful alums who have volunteered as interviewers and informational resources for the prospective students from Southern California. It would be impossible to manage such a large group of prospective students without them, and both the college and I are extremely grateful. If you would like to join our volunteer pool, please contact Saskia Subramanian. | |||
| Career Development | |||
| Saskia and Margaret (your career development reps) are pleased to announce the creation of a BMC career development email list. This list is used to post job opportunities in SoCal and beyond, recruitment notices from local alums, and useful career development information. It will be moderated, so only pertinent info will be let through and you shouldnŐt be inundated by mail. Please email Saskia if you are interested in subscribing. Also, we are still asking all alums to complete our career development survey. An interactive version is available online. If you prefer a printed copy to complete, please contact Saskia. | |||
| Buy Greeting Cards, Help the College | |||
| The Bryn Mawr Club of Southern California handles the inventory for Library Publications as a fundraiser in place of a bookstore venture. All proceeds from the cards benefit Financial Aid and the BMC Libraries. The catalog is mailed each fall, but cards are available year-round. If you did not receive a catalog in the mail, you can request one from Maria Rudolph, our Library Publications Coordinator (send an e-mail message). Alternately, you can order securely online with a credit card, where all of the cards are shown in full color. Check the website regularly -- we will be offering sales and promotions available only online. MotherŐs day is approaching and card sets make great gifts. We have a variety of boxed-set assortments. | |||
| Treasurer Update | |||
| The Bryn Mawr Club of Southern California encourages its members to make tax-deductible contributions throughout the year. Your donations are used for a variety of purposes, including support of Club activities such as our continuing education teas, printing and mailing of newsletters, and May Day events, as well as providing a source of donations to the college's scholarship funds. Last year, your donations combined with the income the Club receives from the Library Publications catalog enabled the Club to give $2,000 each to the Alumnae Regional Scholarship Fund and the Hope Wearn Troxell Scholarship Fund. We hope to do at least as well this fiscal year, which ends May 31. Donors of $20 or more receive the 2001-2002 Club Membership Directory, which was updated this fall. You can help the Club and the students our scholarship donations support even more by applying for matching funds, if your employer or your spouse's employer matches charitable contributions. One other way you can contribute to the Club is by shopping online through www.mycause.com. Use this site as the entrance to some of your favorite online retailers, identify the Bryn Mawr Club of Southern California as your cause, and the Club will receive a percentage of the amount you spend. It's a painless way to help the Club. To everyone who has given previously, many thanks. We really appreciate your support. Sincerely, | |||
| We Missed You! | |||

Professor Farley visited the Southern California Club in November and presented a wonderful paper on his research regarding the economy of the "Celtic Tiger". Saskia Subramanian '88 hosted the event at her home in Manhattan Beach, and in addition to members of the Southern California Club, we also had Haverford College alumni in attendance. Maria Rudolph '81 continued the Club tradition of hosting a holiday party at her home in Claremont this past December. This year several Haverford College alumni attended and expressed keen interest in attending upcoming Club events. Most partygoers attended the performance of the Inland Pacific BalletŐs production of the Nutcracker at the beautiful Bridges Auditorium in Claremont. The BMCSC was delighted to host President Nancy Vickers at our Gala Cocktail Event on Saturday March 16. Over forty Bryn Mawr and Haverford alums and their guests attended, with classes represented from the 50's through the late 90's. It was a wonderful event; if you missed it, be sure to attend our forthcoming gatherings to welcome incoming frosh (4/14) and May Day (5/5)! Don't miss out!
